Cal. 58. NSN. Bbl. 33”. Barrel has had the sight replaced and the bayonet lug has been rewelded. The lock is marked with an eagle on the Maynard tape primer cover and “U.S. HARPER’S FERRY” in front of the hinge. The lock is dated “1860” behind the hammer. Iron trigger guard, butt plate, patch box, barrel bands, nose cap, & sling swivels, as is proper for post-1859 production at Harper’s Ferry. M1855 rifles produced prior to the summer of 1859 had all brass furniture. Correct iron ramrod and an early, but not original, leather sling. The stock has the initials “A T E” carved in the left side, along with what appears to be the Roman numeral II. CONDITION: barrel has a dark overall patina, as does the lock & hammer. Lock does not function properly and needs adjustment. There are minor losses to the wood behind the hammer. Wood has numerous superficial dents & dings with a repair near the rear side screw and a filled divot near the left butt. Good but dirty bore. (01-23173/BF). $2,000-2,500.
