SABER. 1) US M1860. Overall length: 42". Blade length: 35 1/4". Plain blade with a single wide fuller and a secondary fuller near the spine. The only visible mark on the ricasso is a "T," indicating this is likely an import saber. Brass hilt with standard two-branch guard. Wire-wrapped leather grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark patina and is heavily oxidized. Hilt is misshaped. Grip leather is dry and about 80% intact. Wire is loose but complete. Scabbard has a black-painted finish and shows moderate overall wear. 2) SPANISH M1895. This type of saber saw use by Spanish troops during the Spanish-American War. Many of these that exist in this country were brought back as trophies of war. This example measures 40 1/4" overall with a 32 1/4" flat blade. The blade is marked at the ricasso "ARTILLERIA (crowned cannons) FABRICA DE TOLEDO" and "20579." Sheet iron guard with an oddly shaped two-piece crosshatched wooden grip. Iron scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a dark, mottled patina. Hilt is solid but slightly misshaped. Grip is a bit worn. Scabbard has an oxidized finish. (02-23380-3/BF). $400-600.
