This bayonet was for the Plymouth Whitneyville Navy rifle, but is commonly called the “Dahlgren bayonet”. The bayonet was designed to be useful both at the end of a rifle and for hand-to-hand combat. The bayonet itself has an overall length of 17 3/8” with a blade length of 12”. The plain blade has a 5” false edge near the tip. The ricasso is stamped “AMES MFG CO CHICOPEE. MASS.” on one side & “1861.” on the other. Heavy brass hilt, including a crossguard with barrel ring in a rudimentary “S” shape. 1-Piece wood grip. Iron spring. Brass-mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: blade has a light gray patina with scattered staining. Hilt has a pleasing mustard patina. Wood shows noticeable wear. Scabbard is solid but does have crazing. (02-21218/BF). $1,000-1,300.
