Cal. 52. S# 158. Bbl. 32 5/8”. A seldom seen example of a M1861 Navy rifle primarily used by Marine guards aboard ship. Approx. 700 examples were made with 600 being purchased by the Navy and the other 100 being sold on the commercial market. Sharps & Hankins patented the action in 1859, but the Navy rifle was not produced until 1861-62. Barrel has a bayonet lug on the underside and a bladed sight on a trapezoidal plinth with a folding rear sight 5” from the bolster. Action is marked “SHARPS & HANKINS PHILADA” on the right side and “SHARPS PATENT 1859” on the left. Iron trigger guard, barrel bands, sling swivels, & action with a brass butt plate. Walnut stock. CONDITION: barrel has a dark patina with vestiges of plum brown. Action has a mottled gray patina. Hammer retains blued finish. Action does function, but needs adjustments. Stock is cracked on the right side of the neck. Dirty bore, but visible rifling. (01-23165/BF). $1,600-2,200.
