M1872 SWIVEL HOLSTER. This lot consists of a fine M1872 cavalry belt with a standard M1872 “US” belt plate. The black bridle leather belt is equipped with four rectangular brass suspension brackets. The brackets formed what was termed a brace system, which was disliked by the soldiers. The system consisted of twin straps from the belt, over the shoulder, and connecting back to the belt. This system was abandoned after two years. Most belts in service simply had the brace straps removed by the soldiers. The belt does retain the two original sword suspension straps with quick-release clips on the top. Included with the belt is a scarce M1872 pattern holster with Hoffman’s swivel attachment. The holster features a “US” embossed oval on the flap and the original cleaning rod in a pocket at the front of the holster. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: please see pages 91, 755, and 756 of the Meadows book for similar examples. A copy of these pages is included with the lot. CONDITION: belt generally shows light wear with very minor flexing. The sword straps also show light wear. The holster saw extensive field use and, although very solid, does have notable flexing and some flaking. The “US” oval is a bit light but easily discernible. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (02-22070/BF). $1,500-2,500.
