ACTION HOLSTER. This lot consists of an M1881 cavalry belt with a standard M1872 “US” belt plate. The black bridle leather belt is equipped with one rectangular brass suspension bracket. The bracket normally supports a Stuart saber hanger with an extra attached hook. This particular rig has two leather sword straps with quick-release brass clips. Included with the belt is an excellent M1881 pattern holster for a Colt single-action revolver. The holster features a “US” embossed oval on the front and is marked on the flap “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL”. The holster is also heavily stamped under the flap “N.J.”, indicating use by New Jersey troops. The rig further includes a pistol box in the shape of a cap box with an embossed “US” in an oval on the lid. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: please see pages 759 through 763 of the Meadows book for similar examples. A copy of these pages is included with the lot. CONDITION: belt is quite solid with some flexing. The holster shows very light wear and is nearly unissued. The sword straps show light wear. The pistol box shows minor flexing, and the belt loops are strong. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (02-22074/BF). $1,400-2,200.
