BELT. This very rare US accoutrement was developed in 1882 in response to revolvers being issued to infantry sergeants as well as the cavalry. This belt was regulation for a scant two years before production was halted because of its unpopularity with the troops. The black bridle leather belt has a large D-ring closure that the belt doubles back on for size adjustment with the brass frame buckle. There is an attached leather and web 45-cal. open cartridge pouch with 12 loops for 45-cal. cartridges. A small brass plate at the base of the cartridge pouch reads “ANSON MILLS PAT. DEC. 28 80”. There is another small leather strap that is suspended from two more brass D-rings. CONDITION: the belt does show light wear with very little flexing. It is possible the belt is unissued and shows simply storage wear. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Edward Scott Meadows. (02-22073/BF). $800-1,200.
