FROM THE USS MAINE. This very historic Naval bayonet has an overall length of 13 3/8”. This bayonet was recovered from the USS Maine that was sunk in Havana Harbor in 1898. When the Maine was raised, prior to its re-sinking out of the shipping lanes, many artifacts were removed from the ship. Francis Bannerman purchased many of the artifacts for resale at his military goods store on Bannerman Island. This bayonet is permanently in its scabbard, and it is painted on the side in white “USS MAINE HAVANA 1898”. Attached to the top of the bayonet is an early original tag from Bannerman with the inventory number “M-10123G” and a short explanation about the recovery of the bayonet. CONDITION: bayonet shows the effects of being on the ocean floor for some time. All metal parts have an oxidized patina. Portions of the grip are missing. Scabbard is complete. Spring button is missing. (02-19427/BF). $300-500.
