This saber is commonly referred to as the Patton saber because it was designed by General George S. Patton. This example measures 44" overall with a 35" plain blade that has a central medium fuller. The ricasso is marked "U.S. (eagle head)" and "L.F. (flaming bomb) & C. 1918." Sheet iron guard with heavily crosshatched backstrap and thumb depression; the two-piece grip also shows heavy crosshatching. Canvas-covered scabbard with iron throat and tip. CONDITION: blade has a pleasing light gray patina. Hilt has a darkened finish. The base of the grip has had two sections on the inside edge reduced by grinding, likely as a field modification for ease of grip. Scabbard is complete and shows light to moderate wear overall. (02-23380-4/BF). $400-700.
