SWORD. Overall length 36 1/4". Blade length 30 1/8". The exceptionally wide single fullered blade has a blued field extending 14 1/2" up from the hilt. There is gold highlighted foliate & military etching, including a large American eagle with a ribbon in its beak that reads “E PLURIBUS UNUM”. There is an arc near the ricasso that reads “WARANTED”. Gilded brass hilt of standard 5 ball design with a ring at the top of the knuckle bow near the eagle head pommel. Reeded certifiably antique ivory grip. Gilded brass mounted leather scabbard. CONDITION: the blade shows some minor staining and the blued field is a bit faded near the ricasso. The majority of the gold highlights remain and the etching is still crisp. The hilt retains approx. 70% of original gilding and is a bit loose. The grip is cracked but there are no losses. Scabbard mounts retain most of their original gilding. The leather has shrunk slightly and has lost some of its stiffness. Due to the shrinkage, the middle mount is loose but present. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (02-18392/BF). $1,000-1,600.
