DATED 1814 RECONVERTED. Cal. 54. NSN. The 33 1/4" octagon to round barrel with under rib is fitted with rifle sights and has oval cartouches at rear marked "US" and "P" under a later style eagles head. Lock with beveled plate is fitted with reinforced cock, integral rounded pan, bridled frizzen and feather spring with small spear finial. A heraldic eagle with "US" on shield is at center, tail is marked "HARPERS" "FERRY" "1814". Walnut half stock of Kentucky styling has small cheekpiece on left side and is brass mounted. Heavy buttplate has iron release button for long brass patchbox on tang, trigger guard has spur at rear forming grip and sideplate is curled. Inspectors markings are visible on left side opposite lock. Steel ramrod with brass tip mounts through two beaded iron pipes and matching brass thimble. CONDITION: good. Barrel cleaned to silver highlights over brown pitted surface. Lock is mostly bright, reconverted with new cast cock, frizzen and pan. Feather spring appears to be old. Wood shows old refinish with sharp edges softened. Bottom edge of lock inletting is fitted with new wood. Inspectors marks are good, but not crisp. Rear sight and ramrod are reproductions. Bore is very good with strong rifling throughout and lightly pitted. Lock is operable. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22465/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
