Cal. 69. NSN. 18” overall, 11.25” barrel dated “1818” at top of breech and proofed raised “P” cartouche / eagle head / “V”. Lock stamped with spread-wing eagle / “U.S”, at tail: “Springfield/1818”. Inside of lock “JD (Joseph Dale). Internal lock “crescent” proofs match external ones on battery. Trigger plate is stamped “EA” (Epaphriditius Allis). Stock is inspected with script “S” cartouche & “v” / “JN” (John Newberry). There is stamped “B” above buttcap on left. Original wood ramrod has slotted iron tip. This pistol is the largest of all American martial flint pistols. Production started in 1807 but were shelved and all completed and dated 1818. This example with earliest serpentine hammer and original flint configuration is scarce survivor. CONDITION: very good overall, metal overall gray with fine pitting. Stock well fit with cosmetic blemishes, old varnish partially obscures proofs, but all can be discerned. Mechanically fine, smooth clear bore. (01-21488/JS). ANTIQUE. $4,000-6,000.
