JOHNSON. Cal. 69. NSN. This is a relatively scarce musket with only an estimated of 600 made. It is in Type III configuration with standard 42" bbl. held by 3 steel retaining bands. The bbl. is marked "U.S." and "P" at breech end along with initials "J.S." Original flint lock with rounded tail, reinforced cock, inset brass pan, bridled friction frizzen has feather spring with bulbous finial. Area in front of cock is stamped "U.S." / eagle / "JOHNSON". Lock tail is stamped "1832" and "MIDDn CONN.". Walnut stock is iron mounted. Rear sling loop is in trigger guard bow with swell. Illegible inspector's mark is on left side behind sideplate. An owner's name "ABRAHAM ?XXXX?" is on left side near heel. CONDITION: very good. Metal parts with old oil cleaning are mostly gray or brown patina over light frosting and deeper pitting on bbl. Stock has old oil finish with maintenance and has many light marks and dings. It is basically sound with some small minor cracks and chips around lock montice and behind tang. Bbl. channel is quite good without any noted cracks. Good bore with pitting toward muzzle. Mechanically good. A good example of this scarce musket in original flint. Many have been converted to percussion. PROVENANCE: Estate Collection of Kenneth Horn (Grandson of JC Higgins).(01-20763/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
