POMEROY IN SUPERB CONDITION AFTER CONVERSION TO PERCUSSION WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. L. Pomeroy of Pittsfield Mass. produced over 21,000 muskets between 1817-36. This high condition example has 42" barrel finished bright and attached by three spring retained bands. Breech is stamped "US" "JM" and with "P" in circle. Barrel tang is dated 1833. Barrel shows conversion to percussion by the Belgian system with metal added to support nipple. It appears this is the only method used by National Armories. Case hardened lockplate has all remaining holes plugged, a piece of brass let into pan socket and round bodied percussion hammer installed. Lockplate is marked with eagle over "L. POMEROY" at center. "1833" over "US" is on rounded tail. Walnut stock is iron mounted. Buttplate is stamped "US". Marks "G" "20" & "DG" in oval are at top of comb. "LS" in oval as well as individual letters "LS" are on left side of stock opposite lock. Left side of barrel is also stamped "LS". "J.S." is in an oval behind trigger guard tang. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: musket is accompanied by socket bayonet with 18 1/4" triangular blade stamped "U.S.". CONDITION: exceptionally fine. Most metal parts retaining nearly all bright polish done at time of arsenal conversion, with perhaps some later cleaning. Lock retains nearly all case hardening color with high edge wear. Stock is very fine retaining nearly all original oil finish with a few marks, some deep. Inspector's marks are crisp. Bore is bright and shiny. Mechanically fine. Original button ramrod is browning at tip. Bayonet retains nearly all of its bright polish. PROVENANCE: From the Lifelong Collection of Glen E. Mattox. (01-22475/MGM). ANTIQUE. $2,000-3,000.
