PERCUSSION. Cal. 69. S# NSN. Standard configuration with 42" barrel, left rear is stamped with "P" eagle head and "V" along with rack number (?) "10". Musket has been converted to percussion using the Belgian method. Tang is stamped "1833". Lock is stamped with eagle over "US" in front of hammer and "SPRING" "FIELD" "1833" on tail. Walnut stock is iron mounted. Buttplate is stamped "US". Trigger guard with sling loop on bow is stamped "D" & "EH". Sideplate is stamped "S". Other parts are not marked. Stock attaches to barrel with three spring retained bands and left side panel is stamped with inspector's marks "EG" & "FW". Wood behind trigger guard is stamped "JS" & "GS in oval. CONDITION: fine to very fine. Barrels and lockplate showing light cleaning to smooth pewter gray with darkened area around nipple. Furniture remains brown with some original polish highlights. Bands show cleaning. Stock exhibits original finish with raised grain overall. Inspector's marks are quite good. Bore is somewhat shiny with scattered pitting. Lock is good. A presentable example of this important US musket with arsenal conversion. (01-25587/MGM). ANTIQUE. $1,000-1,500.
