Cal. 54. NSN. The 33" barrel with 7 groove rifling is held by two spring retained brass bands. Breech area is stamped "US" "SM" (inspectors initials) "V" and "P". Left side is stamped "STEEL" and "JN". Barrel tang is dated 1850. Case hardened percussion lock with round bodied hammer is marked "E WHITNEY" "US" at center and "N HAVEN" "1853" on tail. Walnut stock is brass mounted. The most noticeable feature is the large rectangular patchbox on right side of butt. Buttplate is stamped "US". Trigger and front band have riveted on sling loops. Inspectors marks are on left side of stock opposite lock. CONDITION: good. Barrel is gray to brown patina with some silvery highlights. Lock shows a considerable amount of case hardening color. Brass mounts show cleaning to gold tones. Stock appears to have been lightly refinished over many marks and dings. Inspectors marks are still legible. Bore is very fine; bright and shiny throughout.
