RIFLE. Cal. 30-40 Krag. S# 432785. Bbl. 22 5/8". A great many Krag rifles were modified after their service use to a short rifle configuration for use by private military academies & other schools. These modifications were done by companies by Bannerman's & Stokes, and the workmanship is usually not arsenal quality. Model 1901 ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. Sight base has been reattached to the shortened bbl. by brazing, and the muzzle turned down to accept a bayonet. The stock has been shortened with a poorly fitted wooden filler piece. The upper band has been relocated. Stacking swivel has been broken. Walnut stock set. Stock is marked w/ faint circled "P" proof behind trigger guard. Smooth trap buttplate. CONDITION: stock set has arsenal rework type finish w/ notably dark stained appearance, notable wear, & handling marks throughout. Stock has notable but small missing chip behind receiver tag & ahead of buttplate tang. Hand guard has extensive missing chip & crack at rear over receiver ring. Metal has turned overall patina w/ areas of light oxidation & wear. Rear sight base screw is not present. Front sight base does not fit bbl. correctly. Fair, worn bore w/ moderate pitting throughout. PROVENANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1186/RW). MODERN. $500-700.
