RIFLE. Cal. 30-40 Krag. S# 175951. Bbl. 22 3/4". Many Krag rifles were modified to a short rifle configuration for use by schools, drill teams, etc. by such firms as Bannerman & Stokes, among others. These modified rifles superficially resemble the models, which were arsenal modified for the Philippine Constabulary. Model 1901 rifle rear sight graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. Sight base has been reattached to the shortened bbl. by brazing. Muzzle has been turned down to accept a bayonet. Stock has been shortened, and a hobbyist gunsmith type filler piece was added at the tip. The forend has been reduced in size to match the relocated upper band. The walnut stock appears unmarked & has added dark finish. Smooth trap buttplate. CONDITION: stock set has wear, staining, & handling marks throughout. Added finish is very unevenly applied. Large missing chip on left side at receiver ring. Crack at stock set under upper band. Metal is turning gray and has patina w/ wear & spots of light oxidation. Extractor is notably loose at the rivet. Binding screw is missing from sight ladder. Fair, worn bore turning dark. PROVENANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1191/RW). MODERN. $500-700.
