MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. S# 19382. Matching numbers on receiver as well as barrel. Bbl. 32 1/2". Early production bbl. w/ liner. This rifle has the correct 1870 dated breech block w/ the eagle head & "US". These rifles have the correct breech block date for the year of manufacture w/ 1868 dated blocks being considered very rare. These rifles were also the first to use a separate receiver, securing the bbl. by threads. Ladder rear sight graduated to 900 yards. Stud type front sight. High arch breech block. Steel firing pin w/ retracting spring. Bevelled lock plate & hammer. Two position tumbler. Lockplate is dated 1863 at tail & has the eagle "US SPRINGFIELD" markings. Correct single shoulder ramrod. Short comb walnut buttstock. Forend has two clamping bbl. bands w/ retaining springs. Buttplate is marked "US". The only markings visible on the stock are "C / 12" on top of grip & "38 / K" on right side of butt, these being unit markings. CONDITION: stock has added finish over early arsenal rework finish. There are numerous handling marks w/ wear & staining. Metal has turned mostly gray w/ patina. The are around the breech, breech block, lockplate & hammer all show traces of remaining blue w/ thinning & wear. Bore has strong sharp lands w/ scattered shallow pitting & frosted grooves.
