SINGLE SHOT TRAPDOOR RIFLE
Cal. 45-70. S# 40791. Bbl. 29 5/8". This rifle was made using an early narrow receiver and correct cadet barrel. The stock is an early low comb model 1873 that has been narrowed at the butt to cadet thickness. The buttplate is notably thicker at the edge from being ground to a narrower profile. The 1879 rear sight is marked with "R". Stud type front sight. Undated lock plate marked "U.S. SPRINGFIELD" and "eagle". Two piece trigger guard with sling swivel. Upper band has both sling and stacking swivels. Ramrod is not present. The Walnut stock has the outline of an oval cartouche on the left side which is not legible. Stock has script "P" proof under grip. CONDITION: Well worn original finish stock with wear dents and scratches throughout. Notable chipping along edges of ramrod channel. Metal has an overall worn patina with areas of oxydation and fine pitting. Bore shows rifling but is dark with pitting throughout. (01-21695/RW). ANTIQUE. $400-650
