SINGLE-SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 280356. Bbl. 25". Receiver mfg. in 1885. Low arch breech block is dated 1873. Model 1879 open rear sight. Sight is marked "R". Sight is attached by slotless screws. Blade front sight dovetailed in ramp. Sight is fastened to bbl. by steel ring & is notably misaligned. Rifle has been sporterized by shortening the original bbl. & stock, removing the upper band in nose cap. Stock tip extends three inches beyond bbl. band. Comb has been reshaped slightly & added wood spacer buttplate. Two piece trigger guard. Low arch breech block. Three click tumbler. Flat lockplate is marked w/ eagle & "SPRINGFIELD". CONDITION: rifle shows hobbyist gunsmith workship. Stock has been refinished & has moderate wear, staining & handling marks throughout. Approx. 1 1/2" crack behind lockplate. Worn metal has traces of blue w/ extensive light oxidation & shallow pitting. Worn bore w/ oxidation in grooves & notable pitting & scratches at the forward end near the muzzle. (01-26217/RW).
