SINGLE SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 45-70. S# 542813. Bbl. 32 1/2". S# indicates receiver made in 1892. Stock cartouche above trigger guard is boxed "SWP / 1892". Low arch breech block correctly marked "U.S. / MODEL / 1884". Bbl. has the "VP / eagle head" proof. Buffington rear sight marked "R" graduated to 2,000 yards. Blade front sight. Flat lockplate marked w/ eagle & "US SPRINGFIELD". Rod bayonet is present. One piece trigger guard. Walnut stock is equipped w/ trap buttplate. Besides the acceptance mark, additional markings include encircled script "P" proof under grip. Marked on left side of butt in red "246" rack number. Correct original single hook sling. Sling marked w/ "US" & is constructed from two piece of leather w/ stitched lap seam. CONDITION: stock has crisp markings & good appearance, however, it has numerous handling marks including light wear to be expected from long service. Notable dent in wrist above acceptance mark. Metal retains a good portion of its original blue w/ thinning light wear. Breech block & breech screw retain a large portion of case colors. Very good shiny bore w/ sharp lands. Sling has wear, scuffing & flexing. (01-26359/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,500-2,000.
