MILITARY TRAINING RIFLE.. Cal. 22 LR. S# 80. Bbl. 24 1/2" This attractive rifle w/ it's very low serial # has a professionally checkered walnut stock in the NRA Sporter style. Unmarked stock is made w/out recoil bolts. Receiver fitted w/ Lyman No. 48B aperture sight & has been drilled & tapped on the left side for a scope mount which is not present. The holes have been filled w/ plug screws. Standard military Model 1903 blade front sight. The bolt is marked only w/ "P" & "8". Bolt has standard type cocking piece. Striker does not appear to have sufficient travel. Gunsmith attention required. Bbl. band is correct type retained by cross pin. Checkered shotgun type buttplate. Grooved trigger. MAG. 1 - 5 rd. early mag. which extends below floorplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: included is a consignor supplied copy righted article "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY AND THE FIRST MODERN VARMINT RIFLES" by Mark K. Benenson which details the development of the 22 Hornet Rifles but does not appear to pertain to this rifle, however it is a very interesting article. CONDITION: stock has very light wear & very sm. handling marks. Checkering is in very good condition. Metal parts retain a lg. degree of original blue w/ thinning & handling marks. Bright bolt body is turning dull. Mag. catch has evidence of repair. Very good shiny bore. PROVANANCE: from the estate collection of Thomas J. Mulligan. (23-1213/RW). CURIO. $1,000-2,000.
