MUSKET. Cal. 70. NSN. Bbl. 45" rnd. w/ vertically stamped “US” in line w/ pan, 3 iron bbl. bands all spring retained, brass blade front sight attached to front band, bayonet lug on top. The lock has same “D” inspection mark found on bbl. & is engraved “CHARLEVILLE”. Sideplate has inspection mark plus “CP” stamped upside down which has been debated as to whether it stands for “Commonwealth Property” or “Commonwealth of Pennsylvania”. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: collector notes. CONDITION: good to very good overall, original flint configuration, bbl. & sideplate have been refinished to a smooth brown color. 1/4" high letters of US surcharge at back of bbl. partially obscured as can be seen in photos. Lock, trigger guard, buttplate, bands & ramrod have a dark mottled gray patina. Stock has been refinished w/ rounded edges, 2" sliver inset forward of trigger guard on left side. Mechanically fine w/ dark bore. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of John "Tim" Breth Jr. (01-17754/JS). ANTIQUE. $3,000-5,000.
