PFC. Kouba shipped overseas on Dec. 26, 1917 and was assigned to the French Army as an ambulance driver. He served in Toul sector Jan-July, 1918, Aisne-Marne July-Aug, Oise-Aisne Sept, & Ypres-Lys Sept-Nov 1918. He was severely wounded from a fragment of an artillery shell while in Château-Thierry while transporting 5 French soldiers from the trenches. Despite the injuries, he was able to get the soldiers to the hospital. After discharge from the hospital he resumed his duties on the front lines.
This grouping contains his WWI Red Cross arm band with an official stamp that allowed the bearer thru all lines, his Purple Heart award with the reverse boldly engraved " Julius C. Kouba ", US WWI Victory Medal, a very scarce and highly desirable WWI US Army Ambulance Service Medal, French Croix de Guerre 1914-18 medal, personalized Good Luck token, WWI US National Army ribbon and the book "Gentlemen Volunteers" by Arlen J. Hansen. CONDITION: overall very fine. (02-26303/ZAL/BF). NON-GUN. $1000-1400.
