MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 1099386. Bbl. 24". Barrel marked behind front sight "SA (flaming bomb) 8-19. These rifles were made to be used with the Pedersen Device, a secret development that converted a bolt-action rifle to a semi-auto with a large capacity magazine. The receiver has an additional "MARK I" added to the markings. There is an ejection port in the left receiver rail, and the stock has been lowered for clearance. The rifle as originally made had a trigger equipped with a double pawl, and the cutoff had an extra notch. The Pedersen Device was not used, and many rifles had the special parts replaced with standard issue types when given an overhaul, as is the case with this rifle. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2850 yards without volley notch. Flat windage and elevation knobs. Blade front sight. Bolt with straight-down handle marked "I" under safety lug. All milled furniture except the upper swivel. Smooth trap buttplate. Walnut stock set. S-type stock with two recoil bolts. No markings are visible. Green web sling. UNNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Model 1942 bayonet with 15 7/8" fullered blade, marked on the left ricasso "U.F.H. U.S. (flaming bom) 1943". grooved composite grips. Green plastic scabbard with metal throat, marked "USN MK 1." Bayonet retains a large degree of its parkerized finish. CONDITION: stock set has an arsenal rework finish with moderate wear, staining, and handling marks. Dove-tailed repair on the right side of the comb. Circular, 3/4" inletted repair on the left side of the forend. Metal is a mix of worn finishes. Bore is shiny with worn lands. PROVENANCE: from The Estate Collection of Charles Wagner. (24-4599/RW). CURIO. $800-1,200.
