MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 7x64 Brenneke. S# 27006. Bbl. 23 1/4". Rear sight is not present. Rifle is fitted w/ scope blocks. One mounted on top of the bbl. in place of the rear sight. The second scope block is mounted on top of the receiver bridge. Block spacing is approx. 8 1/8" center to center. Standard inverted V front sight. Rifle is thought to have been the property of the late Kenneth Waters, noted gun & hand loading author. This rifle appears to be the one pictured on page 252 of Ken Waters' "Pet Loads Complete Volume" by Wolfe Publishing. The rifle reportedly shot well. The rifle pictured shows the same features as this Venezuelan Model 24/30 Mauser rifle. It was originally chambered in 7mm Mauser & was partially reworked w/ sporting rifle features such as a replaced bolt handle w/ knurled knob which was correctly let into the edge of the receiver w/ the stock inletted for bolt handle clearance. The buttstock was then thinned slightly to allow for the forming of a slightly raised cheekpiece. The bayonet bar was cut back. The original sling swivel bows were removed leaving the base in the buttstock & the mounting hole in the lower band. The re chambering of this bbl. was done by the noted gunsmith, Seely Masker. The bbl. is marked on top over chamber "7x64". The bright receiver retains its original FN markings & proof w/ a crisp well executed Venezuelan Crest. This rifle retains the standard Mauser type safety & double pull military trigger. The locking screws in the trigger guard are not present. The walnut stock set has a very nice professional refinish, likely done at time of alteration leaving the markings somewhat faint but legible. CONDITION: stock set has very light wear & scattered sm. handling marks. Metal retains a very lg. degree of its original blue finish w/ light wear & scattered spots of missing finish. Bbl. is bright in area where rear sight was removed. Very good shiny bore. PROVENANCE: The Collection of Gun Sport Ltd owned by Jon R. Thomas. (23-3630/RW). CURIO. $500-800.
