SXS SHOTGUN. Cal. 12 GA. S# 17. During the middle of the 19th century the Parker & Snow Co. mfg. Springfield rifles that led to the eventual production of Parker shotguns. The first shotguns beginning in May of 1867 were marked "Meriden Manufacturing Co.". In July of 1868 the bbl. rib marking changed to "CHARLES PARKER MAKER MERIDEN CONN. LAMINATED STEEL". By June of 1869 the marking changed to Parker Brothers. This very rare rnd. body Miller action shotgun is distinguished by its T-latch "Lifter" action with extended pin that rises above the standing breech to open the shotgun. Back action exposed hammer locks. Top tang is marked "PATENTED NOV.13.1866". Double triggers. Extractors. Bbl. 28" of laminated steel. This gun has simple borderline engraving. Engraving and action styles varied considerably in early guns. Grades of Parker shotguns were not standardized until after 1875. Wedge fastened schnabel tipped walnut forearm and straight grip stock with hand checkering. Left side of stock has a 4 1/2" German silver inlaid banner, with partially legible presentation inscription. LOP: 14 3/8" over a steel shotgun buttplate. Bore Diameter: RT: .767, LT: .768. Choke Constriction: RT: .007, LT: .010. Weight: 7lbs. 5.4oz. CONDITION: bbls. retain 70% lightly faded reblued finish showing numerous marks, dents, and spots of light pitting. Reblued trigger guard has a plum cast. Receiver and lock finish have faded to gray. Forearm shows light wear with touched up checkering having a sizeable chip along the left bbl. channel. Stock has worn finish showing scratches, marks, and mildew spots. Checkering remains largely intact. Functioning action and locks. Lightly pitted bores showing several very small dents.
