RIFLE WITH SCOPE. Cal. 30-06. S# G & H 485. Early Griffin & Howe rifles were assigned serial numbers in blocks by caliber. 30-06 Cal. was assigned a "4" prefix. This rifle is the 85th 30-06 made (ca. 1925). The highest number in this block, recorded by Michael Petrov is 494. Has 22 3/4" rnd. bbl. w/ band on sight ramp w/ silver bead under knurled protector. Top of bbl. is engraved "No 485 GRIFFIN & HOWE, INC NEW YORK". Caliber is at left rear. Springfield action has had tang contoured & a Lyman 48 receiver sight & Noske scope mt. installed. (Griffin & Howe did not develop their side mt. until ca 1930-1931). Bottom metal has not been altered. Relatively plain American walnut stock measures 13 5/8" over M-70 style steel buttplate. Stock features horn grip cap & forend tip along w/ sling eyes & point pattern checkering on grip & forend. A Hensoldt Ziel - Dialyt 2 3/4X scope w/ post & crosshair reticle is in Noske rings, rear w/ windage. CONDITION: all metal parts retain nearly all of a well done reblue, showing very little subsequent wear. Stock refinished w/ a few light marks, checkering recut. Shiny bore has strong rifling, shows some throat erosion & some frosting toward muzzle. Scope tube reblued, optically good. (19-5464/MGM27). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
