12th century, Northern European British Isles. A nicely preserved example with pronounced facial details. The head carved from a conglomerate (stone) in an elipsoid form. The wide crown of the head wtih wide forehead and elevated brown above a pair of horizontal carved oval eyes, the pupils represented as slits. The broad nose with flattened bridge over pronounced expressive and well detailed lips above a carved "dimple" at the center of the chin which exhibits a partial beard in shallow relief. The head exhibits no ears and the rear of the head is only roughly hewn. The carved heads of Ireland and the British Isles are believed to be sybolic of the human intellect and the power within. Mounted on a museum quality display stand. SIZE: 10" h (15" h w/stand) x 5 3/4" w x 4 1/2" d. CONDITION: very good original state with natural patina and some later surface abrasions.
