BARNETT SRC. Cal. 577. NSN. Bbl. 21". Standard configuration. Lock is marked w/ crown over "TOWER" rear of hammer & forward "BARNETT / LONDON". One of a handful in extremely fine condition. C.A. Huey & Russ Pritchard speculate in their text "The English Connection" that this handful of exceptional condition carbines were captured & possibly sold in a northern prize court (page 175-176). Over 10,000 were purchased & used & generally were found in well used condition. CONDITION: very fine overall. Bbl. retains strong traces of original blue finish w/ the balance turned plum. Lock & hammer are overall gray/silver. Brass has been cleaned w/ a light mustard patina. Stock is sound & well fit, cleaned but still w/ sharp edges & crisp "JS" / anchor marking on top of comb forward of buttplate tang. Also a crisp "W.W" is found on flat opposite lock. The "JS" / anchor viewer's mark & the "W.W" mark are both seen on Confederate imported weapons. Huey & Pritchard are not positive who "WW" is but state the possibility that he is William Warton, a Birmingham gun maker (page 105). Mechanics crisp & crisp rifled frosted bore. PROVENANCE: Ex-Vince Gill collection; Ex-Jim Foscue collection. (01-17194/JS). ANTIQUE. $5,000-7,000.
