MODEL 1850 SWORD, CAPT. GEORGE TYSON, 71ST NEW YORK VOLUNTEERS. Elaborate model 1850 foot officer’s sword, 32” deeply etched patriotic panels, “1862” dated flag, “C. Roby & Co / W. Chelmsford / Mass” etched maker. This is about a high a grade you will find in this company grade sword. There is additional engraving and chasing on guard, knucklebow, and pommel, including a patriotic shield with stippled background. Scabbard mounts are relief engraved Including patriotic motifs on drag. Throat & middle mount unusually engraved on both sides with fine jeweler inscription on throat “Presented / to Capt. Geo. I. Tyson / by the members / of company I / 71st NGSNY / July 29th / 1863”. Hilt And scabbard mounts are heavily gold plated, shark skin grip with fancy triple strand gold plated brass wire.
George Ide Tyson (1837-1895) entered service a second Lieutenant, 71st NYV, promoted to captain June 30, 1863 was given this sword by his company July 29, 1863 upon his mustering out. He was in newspaper business in New York City his entire life, and was president of “American News Corporation” at his death, buried in Woodlawn Cemetery, Brooklyn. A very wealthy man, he had 120 foot yacht “Nirvana” and was first commodore, founder & financier of the Riverside Yacht Club, Greenwich, CT. No wonder his men gave him such an elaborate sword as he was used to fine things.
CONDITION: very fine overall, blade retains virtually all its original polish and luster with light staining. leather scabbard body is sound retaining most of its polished finish, seam unsewn not affecting aesthetic. brass hilt, pommel, and scabbard mounts retain much of their original gold wash. All in all a beautiful sword that was very expensive when it was purchased. (02-19181/JS). $3,000-5,000.
