PERSUSSION RIFLE WITH CASE AND ACCESSORIES. Cal. 50. S# 1846. The firm of Gastine Renette is known for making some of the finest firearms in the world during the 19th & early 20th centuries. This rifle has 25" octagon barrel fitted with well made elevation adjustable rear sight with rack and pinion adjustment knob on right. A steel dot front bead is dovetailed through. Top flat behind rear sight is engraved "Gastinne Renette a Paris". Barrel is fitted with under rib holding steel ramrod. S# is stamped on bottom of barrel. Patent breech is nicely filed and has platinum blowout and two lines at rear, top and left flat are scroll engraved. Breech iron is engraved with near full coverage large shaded scroll which matches scroll found on island lockplate with rebated tail and tall round bodied hammer. Front of plate is engraved with maker's name and address. Straight grip stock of well figured dense European walnut is iron mounted with mounts given French gray finish. Stock measures 14" over steel buttplate with scroll engraved long top tang. Trigger plate with vestigial pineapple finial is fitted with set trigger. Trigger guard with finger spur has curl on tang forming grip. Side plate is intricately shaped, forend tip is horn, stock attaches to barrel with captive sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: rifle is housed in its original rosewood case with inlet brass lines on top surrounding intricate flush brass inlay of scrolls surrounding central medallion. Case has cloth lined leather outer cover. There are shipping labels stuck to the top, one marked "The Marquis of Landsdowne". Case is lined in green velvet, maker's name and address is in gold leaf in lid. Bottom compartment is French fitted for barrel, stock & accessories that include, steel bullet mould casting a pointed projectile, copper bodied powder flask by Hawksley, steel patch cutter, adjustable brass powder measure, ebony handled turn screw and nipple wrench with pricker as well as two cocobolo patch containers. A covered compartment contains replaced parts, two rings with percussion cap dispensers (as found in Manton cases), an old paper with load information, some cast bullets and information regarding work done to restore this rifle. CONDITION: very fine with some meticulous restoration. Barrel retaining what appears to be its original brown. Other metal parts retain nearly all of their French gray finish. Stock shows some light repolishing of its original French polish with some scattered scratches. Bore is bright and shiny, lock and trigger are crisp. One silver escutcheon and sidebolt are replaced. Case is very fine with some work done around lock and its mechanism and retains most of its original finish with some shrinkage cracks. Outer cover show considerable wear, closing straps replaced. Interior cloth is very good to fine with rubs and compressions from rifle and accessories some of which are newly made (per information letter in case) others good. (01-22003/MGM).
