DRILLING WITH CASE AND INSTRUCTION BOOK. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2"/9.3x74R S# 334588. The German Luftwaffe took good care of its flight crews and provided this high quality combination gun as a survival weapon in case of a crash. A good number were brought to America by returning servicemen after WWII. This very fine "as found" example is of standard configuration with 25-5/8" barrel set fitted with full length matted rib holding pop up rear and silver bead front sights. Rifle caliber is engraved on milled out portion of rib. Krupp Steel information is on tops of barrels and maker's name and address are around breech ends. A Luftwaffe eagle is stamped on side of right barrel. Barrel flats are stamped with February 1941 commercial nitro proofs for 12 Ga. 65mm chambers and 9.3x74R rifle cartridge. Bottom barrel is also stamped with Sauer SSU logo and Waffenanpt LZA (eagle) depot "2" is on bottom of rear lump. Sauer caveman logo is on bottom of front lump. Case hardened blitz action with side safety, rifle selector on top tang, pin cocking indicators on top, cross bolt third fastener, side clips and double triggers (front set) is lightly scroll engraved. Both sides are marked "JP SAUER & SOHN, SUHL". Bottom of action is marked with "SSU" logo. Rear of top tang is engraved "W.St.". Case hardened steel trigger guard with some scroll on bow has S# on tang. Steel capped pistol grip buttstock made of very dense, nicely stump figured European walnut measures 14" over original "SSU" logo hard rubber buttplate. Stock features small right hand cheekpiece, sling loop matching that found of bottom of barrel, and point pattern checkering at grip. Right side of stock near butt is lightly stamped with Luftwaffe flying eagle holding a swastika. Matching splinter forend has Deeley release. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .720. R .720. Zubehor" "ce". Interior with felt gaskets and wood partitions has list of original contents stenciled on left side of lid. Case presently contains small brown instruction book marked "Drilling M30" "Ausgabe Juni 1941". CONDITION: very fine "as found". Barrels retaining about 90% original blue with scattered scratches and handling marks. Blue shows high edge wear. Action retains about 70% case hardening color, most loss from normal handling around bottom. Top lever blue is silvered on thumb piece. Case hardening of action tangs is silvered at grip. Stocks are very fine retaining nearly all of their original finish with considerable spotting present on buttstock which partially obscures eagle stamp which is not deeply struck due to very dense grain structure of buttstock wood. Checkering shows little wear. Eagle stamp on barrels is very good. Bores are bright and shiny without noted problems. Action is tight. Mechanically fine. Set trigger working. Aluminum case shows considerable chipping, scratching and other loss to paint and remains at about 60%. Case latches are good and leather handle complete but shows chipping and is rather tender. Interior partitions are good with some marks. One felt pad is loose. Instruction book is good; somewhat soiled and foxed. All and all a very fine example of this important military weapon.
