CONVERSION TRAPDOOR SNGLE-SHOT MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 50-70. NSN. Bbl. 36 1/2". Approx. 25,000 of these rifles were altered at Springfield from Model 1863 rifled muskets. There were improvements made from the Model 1865 version w/ a lengthened bolt, firing pin spring & better extraction system. The original bbl. of this rifle was given a liner to reduce it from 58 to 50 cal to use a centerfire cartridge referred to as the 50-70 govt. The metal is finished bright, except the blackened breech block & the case colored lockplate & hammer. Breech block is correctly marked "1866" & "eagle head". Left rear of receiver has "eagle head" acceptance mark. Bevelled lockplate is dated 1865 at the tail & has a spread-wing eagle & "US / SPRINGFIELD" at the front. Two click tumbler. Flip type rear sight . The sight has two fixed sighting holes w/ a 700 yard notch at the top. Is hinged at the front & folds toward the receiver. Stud type front sight. Walnut stock has four acceptance marks on the left panel, two of which are more prominent. One mark appears to be "ESA" which indicates Erskin S. Allin, master armorer. Script "N" located behind trigger guard tang. Buttplate is marked "US". Forend held by three bands & retained by band springs. Middle band & trigger guard bow carry sling swivels. Ramrod is present. CONDITION: stock has very nice original finish w/ crisp markings. Metalwork has been professionally cleaned w/ scattered remnants of very fine pitting notable on lower band, trigger guard & buttplate. Lockplate & hammer show original case colors. Breech block has dark armory finish. Shiny bore w/ sharp lands. Bore shows a shallow partial ring in the area of the upper band. (01-26360/RW). ANTIQUE. $1,600-2,200.
