SPRINGFIELD WITH BAYONET. Cal. 69. NSN. Standard configuration with 42" barrel secured by three spring retained bands is stamped with "V" "P" and eagle head proofs at rear. Tang is dated 1853. Chamfered lock with round bodied hammer has eagle over "US" at center, tail is stamped "SPRING" "FIELD" "1853". American walnut stock with iron mounts has "US" marked buttplate. Sideplate is stamped "S". Inspector's mark "JAS" is on left side of stock opposite lock. Sling loops and original trumpet style ramrod are present. Brass collection tag stamped "M27" is attached to rear loop. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: musket comes with correct style socket bayonet with retaining ring and 18 1/4" triangular blade marked "US". Socket is stamped "F5". CONDITION: very fine plus. Parts were originally finished bright and presently appear to have been cleaned over a few scattered pits. Stock is exceptionally fine with nearly intact original finish, raised grain and just a few minor marks and dings. Inspector's mark is very clear. Bore is shiny. Mechanically fine. Bayonet retains most of its brown finish over some pitting. (01-22756/MGM). ANTIQUE. $3,000-4,000.
