REGIMENT” BROWN BESS FLINTLOCK MUSKET AND BAYONET. Cal. 75. NSN. Bbl. 39" rnd. w/ bayonet lug. Standard India pattern, circa 1800 brown bess. Bbl. w/ proofs stamped at breech. “TOWER” lock w/ “GR” cypher & broad arrow proof. Trigger bow engraved “BUCKS VOLs / H”. The 85th regt., Bucks Vols. were a part of Army that saw action at Bladensburg, Capture Burning of Washington & the Battle of New Orleans. The 85th returned to England in 1814 & this musket is thought to be a souvenir taken in one of these actions as it appears to have seen little use. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: accompanying bayonet is maker marked “OSBORNE” w/ proofs & engraved “W. G. 85”. CONDITION: fine overall. It would be difficult to upgrade esecpially regimentally marked. Iron overall brown patina. Brass has uncleaned olive/mustard patinas, crisp markings. Stock has sharp edges w/ scattered cosmetic blemishes, well patinated chip forward of lock & rear of tang, hairline crack at triggerguard. Mechanically fine w/ dark, pitted smooth bore. Bayonet has similar patina w/ discernable markings. Accompanying ramrod has matching patina, but not the correct button style. PROVENANCE: From the Collection of James B. Taylor. (01-20505/JS).
