SPORTING RIFLE WITH SCOPE. Cal. 300 H&H. S# 506. John Dubiel was one of the craftsmen who left Colt in 1923 at the time of the founding of Hoffman Arms Company. He worked for Hoffman throughout it's life in Cleveland, Ohio as well as Ardmore, Oklahoma. John and Eric Johnson, who also was from Colt, formed the Dubiel Arms Company upon the failure of Hoffman in 1930. The partners continued the Hoffman numbering system and made custom rifles in the old works until John's death in 1937. This rifle S# 506 probably dates to 1932-33 and has 26" medium weight round barrel fitted with stippled quarter rib holding three folding leaf express rear sights. A sling eye is banded on, along with a front sight base with push button detent for knurled sight protector. Top of barrel is hand stamped "MADE BY. JOHN DUBIEL. ARDMORE. OKLA." Top of quarter rib is stamped "CAL. 300. H.H." in front of sights and "NO. 506" behind. Magnum square bridge action has receiver ring stippled and engraved. Square bridge is fitted with Hoffman flip up aperture rear sight. Bolt body, extractor and follower are Damascened. A Griffin & Howe scope base is fitted to left sidewall. Root of bolt handle is dished to clear scope. Drop box bottom metal has hinged floor plate retained by release button in trigger guard bow. Double pull trigger is checkered. Stock of attractive, lightly figured and well veined European walnut measures 14-1/4" over Silver type pad. Stock features very nicely shaped shadow line right hand cheekpiece, steel grip cap and horn forend tip. Classic point pattern checkering with mullered boarders meets at top of grip and continues around forend. Rifle is fitted with Hensoldt 8X scope with crosshair reticle in G&H mount. Both the mount and the base are stamped with assembly number "16". MEASUREMENTS: WEIGHT: 10 lb. 15 oz. with scope. CONDITION: fine to very fine. Metal retaining 60-70% original blue showing hand wear at normal carrying points. Stock retains about 90% of what appears to be its original hand rubbed oil finish with some light marks and scratches. Checkering shows some light wear. Bore is very fine, sharp and shiny throughout. Mechanically good. Scope retains nearly all its original blue. Optically good. A classic long range rifle. Michael Petrov's ("Custom Gunmakers of the 20th Century Vol. II") closing line in his chapter on John Dubiel states: "There may have been other custom makers who could make a stock as well as John Dubiel but there were none better." (25-2466/MGM). CURIO. $7,000-14,000.
