HAMMER GUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2". S# 12006 (1871). These early Westley Richards breechloader were very popular, most were made in pinfire with many later conversions. This gun was made originally as a centerfire and has 30" fine damascus barrels engraved "Patent" "Wesley Richards. 170. New Bond St. London." on narrow slightly swamped game rib. Bottoms of barrels are stamped with Birmingham black powder proofs for 13 bore and S#'s. Bar in wood action has Wesley Richards famous patent bolt engaging long dolls head rib extension. Strikers are bushed and breech face is marked "Wesley Richards Patent 1864" (use number). Top lever with well cut scroll is also engraved "Westley Richards" "Patent". Front spring locks with tall serpentine flat faced rebounding hammers have open scroll on plates and shaded scroll on sides of hammers. "Westley Richards" is on each plate. Trigger plate has rounded finial. Blued trigger guard with scroll on bow has S# on tang. Very well figured and lightly streaked European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 14-1/4" over 5/8" thick checkered horn buttplate. Stock features ususal drop points, flat top grip checkering and vacant silver oval. Matching small crab joint type forend with nicely filed horn tip attaches with sidebolt through oval silver escutcheons. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .728. R .728. Restriction: L .000 (cyl). R .000 (cyl). Wall thickness: L .039. R .039. STOCK: DAH: 2-3/8". DAC: 1-1/2". CAST: about 1/2" off. LOP: 14-1/4". WEIGHT: 7 lb. 0 oz. CONDITION: fine to very fine. Barrels retaining about 60% original damascus finish with some areas thinning from hand wear and some scattered flecking. Action retains most of its case hardening color, about 80% color remains on lockplates and hammers. Top lever and trigger guard retain about 40% of their bright blue and show considerable flaking. Stocks retain most of their original oil finish which is quite dry (no added oil) and has a fair scattering of marks. Bores are very fine, mostly shiny throughout with just a hint of frosting.
