SPRINGFIELD M1 GARAND SEMI-AUTO MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 30-06. S# 519635. Bbl. 24". Original barrel marked "S-A-3-42". Barrel is additionally marked w/ Birmingham Nitro Export Proofs. These rifles were lent to Great Britain under the Lend Lease Act between March 1941 & June 1942. The rifles were originally marked on the upper handguard w/ a red band & a caliber given as ".30" or "300" which indicated they did not use the standard 303 British service cartridge. Some rifles are reported to be w/o this painted band & some bands were removed when the rifles were re-imported into the United States throughout the 1950s & 60s. This example does not show evidence of any red paint. The rifles were given British export proofs when they left Great Britain. Receiver has a very faint marking on top of the ring which appears to be the "crown BNP". Bolt has two punch proofs, but does not have a visible British proof. The British proof markings, in and of themselves, do not constitute proof of a Lend Lease rifle, however, this correct rifle retains all of its early as manufactured features & falls within the serial number range for a Lend Lease arm. Throat & muzzle gauge 1.0. Locking bar rear sight w/ battle range marked elevation knob. Blade front sight w/ protective ears. The sight retains the screw plug. Rifle retains its early features which include the square cut "SA" marked operating rod. Bolt has a "-2" suffix drawing number & is marked "SA". Operating rod has short fork. Clip latch has the rounded front. Single slot gas cylinder lock screw. Trigger housing, hammer & safety marked "SA". Milled trigger guard. Gas cylinder & lock have turned an overall grey. Gas cylinder is marked behind stacking swivel w/ "S" & marked on top w/ a "7". Walnut stock set. Buttstock has the correct boxed "S.A. / G.H.S.", "crossed cannons" & encircled "P" proof under grip. Milled stock bands. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: butt trap contains nickel-plated oiler, combination tool w/ slotted chamber cleaner & plastic grease cup. Also included is an original Cold War era U.S. marked canvas parachutists' individual weapons case M1950 dated "9/16/58" in worn, but serviceable condition. CONDITION: original finished stock set has the wear & handling marks consistent w/ careful service. There are, however, a number of small irregular marks most notably on the right side of the stock over the magazine well, perhaps caused by carrying the rifle along w/ other equipment. There is a notable 1/2" missing chip on the floorplate behind the right side which occurred sometime in the past. Metal retains a large degree of its original parkerized finish w/ light wear. Very good shiny bore w/ sharp lands. PROVENANCE: three pages consisting of notes from a former owner of this rifle & the paperwork when sold at auction. (25-5162/RW). CURIO. $1,500-2,500.
