Cal. 7mm Mauser. S# 35. Bbl.19.5. Mfg. 1935. The Breda Model 30 was designed following the late 1920's machine gun trials. While it was one of the first to utilize a quick change barrel, it had several rather unusual features that were not as popular. It utilizes a closed bolt, delayed blowback operating system w/ a recoiling barrel, similar to the system in the Model 1914 Revelli. To aid in extraction, it was designed w/ an integral oil pump to lubricate cartridges during feeding. The oil reservoir is typically located inside the top cover w/ a spring loaded ball detent delivering lubrication as the rounds are fed into the operating system. There is no such oil apparatus nor fill cover present on this example, obviously manufactured to function without the additional lubrication. It is fed from a right side, non-detachable 20 rd. magazine that pivots forward of the action and reloaded w/ a horseshoe type stripper clip. The magazine can be locked in either position for loading, firing or transport. The actual feed lips are inside the receiver of the gun, not part of the magazine body. The bolt is massive, w/ multiple locking lugs in a configuration somewhat similar to the United States M16's bolt face. The action is charged w/ a right side mounted, non-reciprocating charging handle that can be locked to the rear to hold the bolt open if desired. The Model 30's were typically chambered in 6.5mm though some, such as this example, built for export to Costa Rica, were chambered in 7mm Mauser. The barrel is terminated w. a 3.5" cone flash hider at the muzzle & easily identified by the 5" area of cooling fins, forward of the chamber. Removing the quick change barrel is as easy as pulling the release, located on the left side of the receiver, forward of the top cover, and swinging it down. The barrel can them be slid forward, then pulled up and out to the rear. The front sight is a dovetailed, unprotected blade & the rear sights are elevation adjustable from 500-2000 meters, & fold forward to reveal a simple notch for closer quarters. Mounted below the front sight is a rear-folding bipod, providing 13" of elevation from the ground. It locks tightly in both extended & retracted positions. The heavy receiver is tubular in design, containing the entire trigger group inside the rearmost 2". It utilizes a unique telescoping, spring loaded firing pin which is held captive in this small area. The safety of the Model 30 is located at the rear of the receiver in the form of a small locking lever. Hardwood shoulder stock employs a steel butt plate w/ top folding shoulder rest to aid in support & control. The trigger is located inside a slightly elongated trigger guard, below the rear sight. Pistol grip has serrated wooden grip panels. Marked on top of receiver "GOBIERNO DE COSTA RICA / MITR. LEGG. CAl. 7M N 35 / BREDA ROMA 1935 A. XIII". MAGS: 1 integral 20rd. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 1 spare barrel, chambered in 6.5 Carcano. CONDITION: Receiver finish is complete & consistent w/ nice coverage. Barrel & bipod exhibit more finish thinning. Butt stock has some deep impressions though retains full structural integrity. All parts move fluidly, obviously being properly maintained. Lightly frosted bore w/ worn rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. PROVENANCE: Formerly on loan to the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum. NATIONAL FIREARMS ACT MG REQUIRING BATF TRANSFER BEFORE TAKING POSSESSION. FULLY TRANSFERABLE.(03-1626/JZ). CURIO CLASS III. $5,000-8,000.
