Cal. 22 LR. S# SAR10235. Bbl.17 1/2". Originally manufactured & imported from Austria, the earliest American 180 variants were full auto & classified as Dealer Samples due to the inability to import transferable machine guns after 1968. E&L Manufacturing started building a version in the United States & since they were domestic in manufacture, they could produce fully transferable firearms. The full auto American 180 is an open bolt, select fire 22 LR buzz saw that typically feeds from a 176 rd., 3 tiered metal circular mag. mounted on top of the receiver. E&L made a few plastic mags. w/ a capacity of 165 rds., 220 rds. & 275 rds. All of them utilize a captured spring winding mechanism to operate, just like the originals. The cyclic rate is often rumored to be in excess of 2000 RPM & a single burst in a full mag. is completed in only 7 seconds. The sound is as unique as its appearance, compared more to that of a chainsaw than a firearm because of the excessive cyclic rate. The barrels were offered in both finned versions in a similar style to that of the legendary Thompson Model 1928 and as smooth profile like the M1 Thompson. This particular item is a closed bolt, semiautomatic version w/ a smooth profile barrel. It has a protected blade front sight & an elevation adjustable rear peep sight. The horizontal forend, pistol grip & shoulder stock are an attractive, light colored, matching hardwood. Finish on all exposed metal parts is blued or anodized, all bearing a similar color & tone. Left side non reciprocating charging handle. Safety is located on the right side of the receiver. The unique drum, w/ winding assembly is mounted on the top, above the chamber, forward of the trigger. The ejection port is below the firearm forward of the trigger. Receiver is marked on the bottom, forward of the ejection port is marked "FEATHER IND. INC. ITASCA IL" w/ model, serial number & patent number. Top of barrel marked." 22 LR" forward of chamber. Removable shoulder stock locks w/ a single push button to the rear of the receiver similar to that of a Thompson SMG. Sling swivel left rear side of receiver and on barrel forward of the forend. Currently sporting black nylon sling. MAGS: 1 steel 176 rd. drum & winder. CONDITION: original finish enjoys full coverage on exposed metal surfaces w/ some very light thinning in areas of mechanical intervention. No major visible flaws of any type. Wood furniture exhibits only extremely light handling marks indicating very little use & careful care & storage. Bore is bright w/ descent rifling. Fire control mechanism appears to function correctly when cycled by hand. PROVENANCE: Lifelong Collection of Terrence McCarty. (24-520/JZ). MODERN. $800-1,200.
