SIDELOCK EJECTOR SELF-OPENING GAME GUN. Cal. 12 Ga. 2-1/2". S# 3003 (1930). Henry Atkin worked for Purdeys until the mid 1870's when he went on his own. His guns are almost always marked "from Purdey's" to capitalize on his mentors famous name. Henry Atkin guns are generally always built to the highest standards and in his later guns, he made improvements to the Purdey/Beesley action giving them smoother cocking and ease of opening by reconfiguring the main springs. That feature is incorporated in this gun which has 27" (very popular in the early 30's) chopper lump barrels fitted with very narrow swamped game rib. Top of rib is engraved "HENRY ATKIN Ltd. (from Purdey's) 88 Jermyn St. London S.W.". A gold number "2" is at rear of rib as gun is second gun of a pair. A gold "2" is also found on top lever and forend tip. Barrel flats are stamped with London nitro proofs for 2-1/2" chambers. S# is on bottoms of barrels. Case hardened Beesley type Atkin improved self-opening sidelock action features automatic safety ("SAFE" inlaid in gold), bushed strikers and double triggers. Action is engraved with 80% coverage extremely well cut classic rose and scroll. Maker's name is on each lockplate and on bottom of action where is is over "from Purdey's". Blued trigger guard with open scroll on bow has S# on short tang. Broadly marbled and stump figured European walnut straight grip buttstock measures 15" over Silver pad. Stock features classic drop points, point pattern grip checkering with mullered borders and a silver oval engraved with a monogram "PFE" (?). Matching splinter forend with Anson release is fitted with Atkins improved ejectors resembling the Southgate type. MEASUREMENTS: BBLS: Bore Diameter: L .731. R .731. Restriction: L .022 (mod).
