1886 EXTRA LENGTH LEVER ACTION RIFLE WITH FACTORY LETTER. Cal. 38-70 WCF. S# 90616. Bbl. 28" octagon. Mfg 1894 (first year for this caliber). Total production of the Model 1886 is 156,599. "WINCHESTER LEVER ACTION REPEATING FIREARMS VOLUME 2" by Arthur Pirkle states that only 830 of these rifles are documented as being manufactured in this caliber (0.5%). That alone makes this rifle a true rarity, and when combined with the fact that this gun was manufactured with special order features such as a 2" longer than standard barrel and set trigger, finding an example in any condition would be an incredibly difficult endeavor. Bead front sight, sporting rear sight missing elevator, with a combination tang sight. Full length mag. Single set trigger. Original finish was blue and case colored. Walnut forearm and straight grip stock, with crescent steel buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: copy of Cody Firearms Museum record stating "Type: Rifle/ Caliber: 38/70/ Barrel Type: Octagon/ Barrel Length: 28 inches/ Trigger: Set/ Sights: Lyman front and rear/ Received in warehouse on September 18, 1894/ Shipped from warehouse on September 18, 1894, Order number 20390". CONDITION: metal has faded with age to an even, brown patina, with surface corrosion. Stocks have an age darkened worn appearance, with numerous scratches and marks. Sound action, with functioning single set trigger. Dark pitted bore, retaining largely intact rifling. (01-27179/DS). ANTIQUE. $3,500-5,000.
