CAP BOX. Cap boxes were made by the many thousands for the Civil War. Confederate examples are scarce & marked ones are rare. The most desirable are those marked “CS”. There are a couple variations made at different arsenals, & the only embossed “CS” also marked by the arsenal known are Danville, VA arsenal. This is wonderful survivor w/ classic Confederate characteristics of single belt loop & turned wood finial for closure. The “CS” in 1.2” oval is crisp, often worn & not discernible. CONDITION: good overall, complete & original, including inner flap, leather dry w/ emollient coating, stitching all sound, tab is complete & unbroken or torn, supple, crazing. All-in-all superior condition “CS” embossed box. PROVENANCE: Cullen Smith estate collection. (02-17257/JS). $6,000-8,000.
