The approximately 15" X 20 1/2" poster with its tan background shows an American Balloon Observer standing in the balloon basket bidding farewell to a young woman in his arms. The couple are attended by two dogs. The mellowing poster is labeled in the top corner "The American Weekly" / Section of the NY Sunday American, Sunday July 21, 1918. The legend at the lower left hand corner is entitled, "OBSERVERS" / Painted especially for this Page by Howard Chandler Christy and signed by artist in the bottom center with "1918". CONDITION: poster has three horizontal folds with one vertical fold plus has two repairs, both near the lower left corner. One is a nearly 4" repaired tear. The other is an irregular shaped 1" filled hole. Red metal frame has very light wear with scattered handling marks. (02-25131-1/RW). $400-600.
