ACTION RIFLE. Cal. 8x57 (8mm Mauser). S# 8166b. Bbl. 23". Blade front sight. Tangent rear sight graduated to 1800m. All visible matching numbers with proper "623" German inspection stamps. Very rare prewar Steyr G12/34 bolt action rifle made for the German Air Force. Prior to the German takeover, Steyr produced a short rifle for Chile & this model was subsequently modified for Luftwaffe production. These rifles were previously called "G29.O" by collectors but Steyr documents of the period refer to them as G12/34. Receiver top has 1939 date & "660" code for Steyr. Blued finish. Walnut stock set with bottom mounted sling swivels & leather sling. Right side of butt has two strong eagle "623" markings & an eagle "L" Luftwaffe marking. Buttplate has an etched Social Security number, possibly done by the vet who brought this rifle back. Cleaning rod present. CONDITION: stock set shows a couple thin minor cracks on handguard, some scattered moderate abrasions on right side of stock, scattered dings, handling marks & scratches. Metal retains perhaps 30% original blue with overall thinning to a silvery-gray color, some oxidation staining on the exposed edges & a few minor dings on bottom metal. Action functions properly when hand cycled. Good bright bore with some scattered light oxidation. (25-510/MJC). CURIO. $3500-5500.
