RIFLE. Cal. 44 WCF. S# 27441. Bbl. 24" octagon. Rocky mountain front sight w/ German silver blade & sporting rear sight. Full length mag. The scarce open top 1873s are found between S# 27,000 & 28,000. They were produced during the patent infringement period as were the open-top 1876s. Features include bushed firing pin, pinned single set trigger & early style loading latch. Walnut forearm & straight grip stock w/ crescent steel buttplate. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: Cody Firearms Museum letter stating the following information, "Type: Rifle / Barrel Type: Octagon / Trigger: Set / Received in warehouse on December 31, 1877 / Shipped from warehouse on May 01, 1878, Order number 11690." CONDITION: metal has faded to a light gray-brown showing areas of light pitting & small dents. Wood has dark worn appearance w/ numerous scratches, marks & heavy gouges. Forearm is missing chips along the bbl. channel. Action & trigger have good function. Dark pitted bore retaining largely intact rifling. PROVENANCE: From the lifelong collection of Jerry Senter.
