Cal. 7.62x54R. S# CG101 (Cyrillic). Bbl. 24 5/8". Post front sight with hood. Tangent rear sight graduated to 1500m. Rare SVT-38 precursor to the more famed SVT-40 rifle but the 38 was made in far fewer numbers due to the latter design. Total production of SVT-38 was only approx. 191,000 rifles vs. the 1.4 million SVT-405 manufactured. Additionally, the Izheusk-Arsenal only manufactured 69,000 (8400 in 1939) of the 191,000 produced, making this example an extremely scarce variation of the SVT series rifles. The SVT-38 was used in the Winter War & WW2. Metal parts have mismatched numbers. Receiver top has Izhevsk arsenal marking & 1939 date. No visible Finnish or import markings. Blue finish. Hardwood stock with bottom mounted sling swivels & canvas sling. Cleaning rod present on right side of stock. No visible stock numbers or cartouches. MAGS: 1-10 rd. that appears to be an arsenal refinished & is of the SVT-40 style. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: pouch with small tool kit, rare 14" blade SVT-38 bayonet with scabbard & frog. CONDITION: refinished stock set has added finish with a couple thin cracks on forend belly between front band & nosecap, an armorer style patch repair behind trigger guard, some dings & handling marks. Handguard is a bit loose. Metal is mostly gray with some scattered oxidation, traces of bluing, some splotchy patches mostly on rear sight base, edge wear & handling marks. Bore shows scattered frosting & light pitting but strong rifling. (25-5183/MJC). CURIO. $7000-11,000.
