ACTION MILITARY RIFLE. Cal. 6.5 Jap. S# 18. Rifle was likely given a new low S# during WWII as the serials on the bolt and bayonet lug are 3 digit numbers. Bbl. 31 1/8". These "hook safety" rifles were the predecessors of the later Type 38 which superceded this model around 1906. Many of these rifles were sold during WWI to countries such as England for use by the Royal Navy and to Russia which was desperately short of small arms during this period. The "mum" has been removed from the receiver ring of this rifle leaving the Type 30 characters. The left side of the receiver retains the Koishikawa Arsenal interlocking circles. Receiver and trigger guard made with detachable tangs. Ladder rear sight graduated to 2,000 meters. Inverted V front sight. Straight bolt handle with rounded profile knob. Bolt has the distinctive hook type safety and is made with a detachable bolt head. Correct 29 1/2" cleaning rod with slotted brass tip. Hardwood stock set with 2 piece buttstock construction. Hand guard extends only slightly beyond lower band. Period brown leather sling with brass stud and silver colored buckle. UNATTACHED ACCESSORIES: 15 5/8" fullered blade Type 30 bayonet. Right Ricasso marked with Koishikawa interlocking circles. Cross guard with curved quillon. Grips retained by 2 screws. Birds head pommel with S# at rear. Steel scabbard with brown leather frog. Blued scabbard turning patina with moderate wear. Frog has wear, staining & flexing but stitching remains tight. Bayonet has bright blade with light wear. Balance of metal has light wear and light oxidation. Grips have wear and staining. Blade does not seat fully in scabbard. CONDITION: stock set has added finish over moderate wear and handling marks. Metal has 60% blue turning patina with light oxidation. "Mum" was removed in a professional manner. Bore has dark worn appearance. PROVANANCE: the Collection of Curtis H Halvorson. (23-5902/RW). CURIO. $400-600.
